Being Before Doing
“Live right, and you will eat from the life-giving tree. And if you act wisely, others will follow.” Proverbs 11:30 (CEV)
Some people think of leadership only in terms of action. But leadership is a lot more than that. Leadership is not just something you do; it’s something you are.
While it’s true that all leaders desire results, still being must precede doing. A common often occurs when leader’s real identity and the desired results don’t match up. But, when there is consistency in character, competence, and purpose, it makes a powerful statement to the people around them – and folks notice and desire to join in.
You’ve heard if said, “If you want to know if you’re leading, look behind you to see if anyone’s following…otherwise you’re just out for a walk.” If people are only following you because of your DOING, not your BEING, then you’ll exhaust yourself trying to outdo your last big WOW!
If you want to do great things with your life, then seek to become a better person before desiring to become a better leader. Nothing great can be achieved alone. Any task worth doing required the help of other people. And if you want to attract good people, you’ve got to become a better person yourself. If you’re willing to do that, then you can leave the results to God.
